Hello Parents,
I hope everyone had a wintery weekend! I enjoyed staying in by the fire! I sent out a sign-up genius earlier for Student Led Conferences for my homeroom. Please see that email for information on SLC for February 11th. This week students are completing their final Write Score assessment. Students will also start on their Book Club Movie Trailers for their culminating project. This is one of my favorite projects they do this year! Students get to be creative and show what they comprehended from the text. Students will be working on their informational pieces about the National Park they chose. This topic has really inspired me to see more of our country! Don't forget to check out the homework tab at the top for links to the quizlets for this week! Thank you and have a great week! Hello Parents and Students,
I hope everyone had an opportunity to remember all the wonderful things Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did for our nation! I was happy to spend it with my sister and mother yesterday planning my sister's baby shower. Report Cards and Zoo Field Trip information went home in Friday Folders. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Important Chaperone information on the back of the field trip form. This week we are continuing with Book Clubs. Students will continue with their research on their National Park this week as well. It is so interesting to see what students are finding on their research journey! Tomorrow we are going to be working on DRA assessments and trying to finish those up. Students are working on their Class January Book Challenge! First block has a goal of 103 books and 2nd block has a goal of 141 books. They are both getting close!! As this 9-weeks progresses students will continue to read and take SRC assessments. Students are to take 4 this 9-weeks. Next week students will be taking their final Write Score assessment via paper/pencil. I hope everyone has a great rest of the week. Kara Merck Hello Parents and Students,
I hope everyone had a great weekend! We are starting on book clubs this week. Students got to choose between two non-fiction books in their Lexile range. Students also took the STAR Reading assessment today. This 9-weeks students will be learning about Informational Writing. They will start on researching a National Park this week, and start on their rough draft. Students will use internet, book, and encyclopedia resources to do their research. Be on the look out for a sign-up genius for the Student Led Conferences coming up February 11th. Also a few other reminders, Report Cards come out this Friday. We do not have school on Monday January 18th in for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Next week students will be taking their last Write Score assessment of the year. Kara Merck Hello Parents,
I am excited to see all my students sweet faces this morning! They all look well rested and ready for a new year! We had our PBIS Character Counts Kickoff assembly this morning and the students did an amazing job remembering how character counts at Sweet Apple! We started our class off with New Year's resolutions and goals. Students told me personal goals and then we got started brainstorming reading and writing goals. I am very impressed with their goal making, and I believe you will be too. That leads me into Student Led Conferencing coming up. Students have started their reading and writing portfolio with their goals and what they are proud of this year. Student Led Conferences differ from traditional parent-teacher conferences in that the student is the one who does the talking! Student Led Conferences have become a best practice in many schools across the nation as research shows that the increased accountability and participation in the learning process greatly benefits students. At your Student’s Conference, he or she will sharing highlights of their work and progress in Math, Reading, and Writing. Parents – please mark your calendars and save the date of Thursday, February 11th. Please click the link below to take our intent to attend survey. Once we have a sense of participation we will send out a follow up email with a specific window of times that you can sign up for. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1fYSWPql_Gy0kbpZ369eo7OQyi3xBRUux2O8344VlsUQ/viewform Important – February 11th is the only date available for a Student Led Conference, as it has specifically been set aside for teachers to be available to facilitate this experience. Unfortunately, there are no exceptions to this rule. Also this 9-weeks students will be responsible for using the correct conventions (capitalization and punctuation) in ALL subjects, including Math, Science, and Social Studies. Thank you in advance for your support and I know you will enjoy seeing your child’s great work! I hope everyone has a very happy new year!! Kara Merck |
